Our practice philosophy is centered around evidence-based medicine. Our practitioners stay up to date on the latest recommendations on preventative medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions and disease processes. We encourage our patients to be active participants in their healthcare and strive to create long lasting and caring relationships.
At Total Sports and Family Care we offer comprehensive services in our office including onsite X-Rays and Labs. We make available same day appointments when you are sick or injured and we encourage preventative care with yearly wellness exams. We care about you.

Our Team
Dr. Karen L. Allen
Dr. Allen is a native of Mobile, Alabama and loves all things coastal, including Mardi Gras. She attended the University of Alabama, where she played clarinet in the "Million Dollar Band". She then graduated Magna cum laude from University of Alabama in Birmingham, with a BS degree in Occupational Therapy. After working as an OT in Mobile, Dr. Allen then went on to medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She finished training in Family Medicine at the UAB-Huntsville Family Practice. She has an interest in sports medicine, and has completed half marathons and a century bike ride. She has been in leadership positions at both Crestwood and Huntsville Hospital, and is currently Chief of Medical Staff at Crestwood Hospital.
Dr. Darla R. Cowart
Dr. Cowart is a native of Helena, Alabama. She completed her undergraduate degree in English at The University of South Alabama and her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She went on to complete her Family Medicine residency and Sports Medicine fellowship at the UAB Family Medicine program in Huntsville, AL, making her double boarded in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Cowart’s extensive sports medicine experience includes serving as the team physician for The University of Alabama at Huntsville since 1998 as well as having served, as the team physician for the Rocket City Marathon, the Cotton Row 10K race, a local arena football team, and a local high school. She has completed multiple marathons and half marathons, a 100-mile bike ride, triathlons, and coaches softball.
In addition to Dr. Cowart’s sports medicine accomplishments, she has served on the Board of Directors for multiple community organizations including Thrive, Crestwood Hospital, and The Madison County Medical Society.
